Der Literaturnobelpreisträger Thomas Mann floh vor den Nazis nach Amerika. Von dort aus sendete er monatlich über die BBC Rundfunkreden an die deutschen Hörer. Verzweifelt, mahnend, wütend versuchte er, den Deutschen während des Krieges immer nur das zu sagen: „Macht nicht mit!“ Bemerkenswert an seinen Reden war nicht nur sein Engagement, denn eigentlich verabscheute er politische Interventionen, sondern auch, wie sehr die Umstände seine Sprache und sein Schreiben veränderten. Krieg, Vertreibung und Exil greifen tief ins Werk eines jeden Künstlers ein und stellen ihn vor die Frage: Einmischen oder nicht? Für Thomas Mann war die Sache klar: Er konnte nicht anders als Widerstand leisten. Mely Kiyak hat die Rundfunkreden Deutsche Hörer! mit einem Vor- und Nachwort neu herausgegeben. Sie kommentiert ausgewählte Reden, gelesen von Maria Schrader.
